jstudyjava.org: FAQ for Sun's Java Web component developer exam
SCWCD home | SCWCD questions | SCWCD links | SCJP home
There are two books that are currently available specifically for Sun Web Component Developer exam. If you can afford, it is a good idea to buy one of these books. More than 90% of the exam covers Servlets, JSP and related topics. The only other topic is Design Patterns. There are many good books that cover Servlets and JSP and this covers most of the Certification material. Design Pattern questions are relatively simpler, and there is good material available online. All the books that I am recommending below, besides being good certification books will also act as good references for your future Servlets/JSP projects.
In July 2002 the first book on SCWCD was published. SCWCD Exam
Study Kit: Java Web Component Developer Certification by Hanumant
Deshmukh, Jignesh Malavia is a good buy for this exam. The accompanying
CD with the book includes JWebPlus, the exam simulator from Enthuware
that contains three full size tests on the SCWCD pattern. If you want
to buy just one book for the SCWCD exam, then this is the book to buy.
The book is well-written and should act as a good reference for you.
I think another good book to prepare for SCWCD exam is More Servlets and
JavaServer Pages by the famous author Marty Hall. The book is written
in an easy to read fashion. It covers Servlets 2.3, and JSP 1.2 . The book
also covers deployment descriptor and listener classes, which are important
for the exam. Since the book is not specifically for the SCWCD exam, you
will need to know what topics are covered in the exam, and need to skip
other material. For example for the exam, you will not be required to read
Chapter 9 about Servlet and JSP filters, and Chapter 12 - JSP standard Tag
library. If you already have the Core Servlets book by the same author,
then some of the chapters of this book will look very similar to the Core
Servlets book.
Java 2 Web Developer Certification Study by Natalie Levi,
Philip Heller is the second book written specifically for SCWCD exam.
Even though the book covers all the material required for the exam, it
has a lot of typos. I will recommend readers to skip this book till the
second edition arrives.
The More Servlets book covers both Servlets and JSP. There are many good books that cover each of these topics separately. I am including some of these below.
Java Servlet Programmng by Jason Hunter and William
Crawford is a famous book on Servlets. It covers Servlets in detail, but
probably is more suited for readers with some prior Servlet experience.
JSP : The Complete Reference by Phil Hana is a good
book on JSP.
Last but not the least if you are just starting with Servlets and JSP,
then there is a very good first book - Core Servlets and JSP by
Marty Hall. This extremely popular book is available online now at http://pdf.coreservlets.com
. The version of Servlets in this book is 2.2, and the exam covers
2.3 . The version of JSP in this book is 1.1, and the exam covers 1.2
. So I will not recomend the book just for preparing for the SCWD exam.
